Apple Inc. has planned a staff celebration at its Cupertino, Calif., headquarters next week as part of company efforts to commemorate the life of co-founder Steve Jobs.

Separately, a death certificate released by California authorities on Monday said Mr. Jobs died at his home of respiratory arrest and a pancreatic tumor.

The Apple event, which will be open to staff only, is scheduled for 10 a.m. PDT on Oct. 19 and will take place at an outdoor amphitheater on Apple's campus, according to a memo sent Monday to staff from Chief Executive Tim Cook.

Mr. Cook said he had "experienced the saddest days of my lifetime and shed many tears" since the death of Mr. Jobs, according to a copy of the memo seen by The Wall Street Journal. Next week's event, he said, would allow "Apple employees to take time to remember the incredible things Steve achieved in his life and the many ways he made our world a better place."

The memorial service was reported earlier by Reuters.

The death certificate said Mr. Jobs died at 3 p.m. PDT on Oct. 5, less than two hours before the company issued a statement announcing the news. The document, issued by the Santa Clara County clerk's office in San Jose, Calif., said no biopsy of the tumor or autopsy was conducted.

Mr. Jobs was buried at Alta Mesa Memorial Park in Palo Alto, Calif., on Oct. 7, according to the death certificate. The Wall Street Journal earlier reported that the funeral was also held that day in a small, private gathering.

Mr. Jobs was treated for a rare form of pancreatic cancer in 2004. In 2009 he had a liver transplant for an undisclosed illness.

He resigned his position as Apple chief executive on Aug. 24, citing health problems.
